Low Back Pain and Ageless Physiotherapy Clinic solutions.

Understanding your low back pain and causes: Ageless Physiotherapy Clinic solutions to pain free back.

“Eighty percent of the population of the United States, at some point in their life, is going to have back pain,” says Ronald J. Wisneski, MD, an orthopedic surgeon, specialist in spinal disorders and spine surgery, and associate in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa.
Back pain is a very common complaint with approximately 80% of all Americans having low back pain at least once in their lives. Back pain is a common reason for absence from work, visiting the doctor’s or disability.

According to the NHS (National Health Service), UK, back pain is the largest cause of work-related absence in the United Kingdom. Although back pain may be painful and uncomfortable, it is not usually serious. Even though back pain can affect people of any age, it is significantly more common among adults aged between 35 and 55 years and associated with the way our bones, muscles and ligaments in our backs work together.

Pain in the lower back may be linked to the bony lumbar spine, discs between the vertebrae, ligaments around the spine and discs, spinal cord and nerves, lower back muscles, abdomen and pelvic internal organs, and the skin around the lumbar area. Pain in the upper back may be due to disorders of the aorta, tumors in the chest, and spine inflammation.
What is low back pain?
Low back pain refers to pain that you feel in your lower back accompanied with stiffness, decreased movement of the lower back, and difficulty standing straight which can last for a few days to a few weeks.
What are the risk factors?
A mentally stressful job
Pregnancy – pregnant women are much more likely to get back pain
A sedentary lifestyle
Age – older adults are more susceptible than young adults or children
Gender – back pain is more common among females than males
Strenuous physical exercise (especially if not done properly)
Strenuous physical work.

Likely Scenarios of causes of back pain?
Most people have at least one backache in their life. Although this pain or discomfort can happen anywhere in your back, the most common area affected is your lower back. This is because the lower back supports most of your body’s weight.
Acute low back pain is most often caused by a sudden injury to the muscles and ligaments supporting the back. The pain may be caused by muscle spasms or a strain or tear in the muscles and ligaments.
Low back pain is a universal human experience — almost everyone has it at some point. The lower back, which starts below the ribcage, is called the lumbar region. Pain here can be intense and is one of the top causes of missed work. Fortunately, low back pain often gets better on its own. When it doesn’t, there are effective treatments.
Let’s look at likely scenarios that might be huge risk factors for low back pain.
Overdoing it at the gym or golf course is one of the most common causes of overextended muscles leading to low back pain. You’re especially vulnerable if you tend to be inactive during the work week and then spend hours at the gym or softball field on the weekend.
Although you may wear your purse, backpack, or briefcase over your shoulder, it is the lower back that supports the upper body — including any additional weight you carry. So an overstuffed bag can strain the lower back, especially if you carry it day after day. If you must tote a heavy load, consider switching to a wheeled briefcase.
Severe back pain after a fall or injury should be checked out by a health care professional. Other warning signs include a loss of bowel or bladder control, leg weakness, fever, and pain when coughing or urinating.

If you have any of these symptoms along with your back pain, contact Ageless Physiotherapy Clinic.
If your job involves lifting, pulling, or anything that twists the spine, it may contribute to back pain. However, sitting at a desk all day comes with risks of its own, especially if your chair is uncomfortable or you tend to slouch.
The kind of back pain that follows heavy lifting or exercising too hard is often caused by muscle strain. But sometimes back pain can be related to a disc that bulges or ruptures. If a bulging or ruptured disc presses on the sciatic nerve, pain may run from the buttock down one leg. This is called sciatica.
Piriformis Syndrome and Sciatica. Why are they always fingered.?
Piriformis syndrome is an uncommon neuromuscular disorder that is caused when the piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve. The piriformis muscle is a flat, band-like muscle located in the buttocks near the top of the hip joint. This muscle is important in lower body movement because it stabilizes the hip joint and lifts and rotates the thigh away from the body. This enables us to walk, shift our weight from one foot to another, and maintain balance. It is also used in sports that involve lifting and rotating the thighs — in short, in almost every motion of the hips and legs.
The sciatic nerve is a thick and long nerve in the body. It passes alongside or goes through the piriformis muscle, goes down the back of the leg, and eventually branches off into smaller nerves that end in the feet. Nerve compression can be caused by spasm of the piriformis muscle.
Symptoms of Low Back Pain
Symptoms range from a dull ache to a stabbing or shooting sensation. The pain may make it hard to move or stand up straight. Acute back pain comes on suddenly, often after an injury from sports or heavy lifting. Pain that lasts more than three months is considered chronic.

How much do you know about Degenerative disc diseases and Herniated disc diseases.?
Degenerative disc disease is a term used to describe the degenerative changes that occur in your spinal discs as you age due to wear and tear often brought on by the kind of work we do, our lifestyles or injury and accidents.
The spine’s vertebrae are cushioned by gel-like discs that are prone to wear and tear from aging or injuries. A weakened disc may rupture or bulge, putting pressure on the spinal nerve roots. This is known as a herniated disc and can cause intense pain.

How do we diagnose your low back pain?
To help us diagnose the source of low back pain, be specific in describing the type of pain, when it started, related symptoms, and any history of chronic conditions. Our physiotherapist will or probably not need to order X-rays, CT or MRI scans before starting treatment by making use of all the information you are able to pass along during your initial consultation.
If back pain has left you inactive for a long time, Ageless Physiotherapy Clinic highly specialized physical rehabilitation programs can help you strengthen your muscles and get back to your daily activities guiding you through stretches, strength exercises, and low-impact cardio, and different types of therapies that will help you be fitter without straining your back.

At Ageless Physiotherapy Clinic, our interest is to help you alleviate the pains and dysfunctions that might have been caused by your back pain and attendant spinal issues. We make use of the best diagnostic tools and treatment protocols which have helped us to arrive at our goals quickly.

Hi Butch,Thanks for the question. I find that isuses of pronation and supination are caused mostly through wearing structurally supported shoes and heel strike. Since the heel is a hard and round bone, the foot will roll either inwardly or outwardly depending on whether you have muscle imbalance causing inward or outward rotation at the knee.Since the forefoot is flat, there is less roll that takes place through the foot. By adopting a forefoot strike gait pattern, you should have significant change or elimination of pronation and supination. I don’t consider being flat footed to be an issue. I believe it is a man-made-up diagnosis. We come in all shapes and sizes. Some people have low arches, some have high. I believe this is the way we are designed and the design is not flawed. If you have pain with your feet, it has more to do with postural dysfunction and imbalances in your body, especially in the arches of your feet. There is a small percentage of the population that may have true structural isuses with their feet. For these people the use of orthotics is beneficial. But they are a tiny fraction of the populace. The rest of us just need to move differently. Here is an article I wrote awhile back that goes into heel strike compared to forefoot strike in more detail.Jesse James Retherford
