Why we offer our Stroke Patients Highly Specialized Physical Rehabilitation Programs

Indianapolis Rehab Center.

Stroke, a cerebro-vascular attack that tend to happen due to blockage of the essential vessels supplying oxygen and other essential nutrients to the brain or rupture of the same vessels most times occur in form of an attack. But in some parts of Nigeria, that attack is believed to be spiritual-requiring ferocious prayers, application of anointing oil, holy water, burning of incense and candles obviously to ward off or cast out the demonic spirits responsible for this so called attack.
The eventual outcome of the patient’s response to assessment, diagnosis and treatment outcomes will be decided by the interpretation given to such attack by family members and friends.
The brain is a remarkable organ that has the ability to rewire itself to some degree. Areas damaged by a stroke may be able to work again. And parts of the brain that have not been affected by the stroke may be able to take over for the damaged areas, doing some of the tasks formerly controlled by the affected areas.
Much of your improvement in motor functioning, walking, using your arms and legs comes in the early phase of stroke recovery. This is one of the reasons that it is so important to start rehabilitation as soon as possible.
This is the reason why STROKE treatment is very URGENT. Every minute counts. The longer blood flow is cut off to the brain, the greater the damage. The most common kind of stroke, ischemic stroke, can be treated with a drug that dissolves clots blocking the blood flow. The window of opportunity to start treating stroke patients is three hours. But a person needs to be at the hospital within 60 minutes of having a stroke to be evaluated and receive treatment.
A major focus of research has emerged in the neurological sciences to elucidate the molecular and genetic basis of various neurological diseases. Indeed, genetic factors are implicated in susceptibility for many neurological disorders, with family history studies providing strong evidence of familial risk for conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s diseases.
Heritability studies also suggest a strong genetic contribution to the risk for neurological diseases. Genome-wide association studies are also uncovering novel genetic variants associated with neurological disorders. Whole-genome and exome sequencing are likely to provide novel insights into the genetic basis of neurological disorders. Genetic factors are similarly associated with clinical phenotypes such as symptom severity and progression as well as response to treatment.
Specifically, disease progression and functional restoration depend, in part, on the capacity for neural plasticity within residual neural tissues. Furthermore, such plasticity may be influenced in part by the presence of polymorphisms in several genes known to orchestrate neural plasticity including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and Apolipoprotein E. (APOE).
Also a recent research in the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation:September/October 2014 – Volume 29 – Issue 5 – p 451-459 with research title: Comparative Effectiveness of Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation: Differential Outcomes Across TBI Model Systems Centers eventually results in assertion that
there were large differences in patient characteristics across centers (demographics, TBI severity, and functional deficits at admission to rehabilitation). However, even after taking those factors into account, there were significant differences in functional outcomes of patients treated at different TBIMS centers.
These research outcomes and a lot of others under physical rehabilitation of stroke patients and the effects of neuro-rehabilitation have made us to formulate our programs towards making sure we make a difference in our patients recovery as fast as possible.
At Ageless Physiotherapy Clinic: Physical Rehabilitation Center for Children and Aged we put into your rehabilitation essential factors to speed up your recovery and make you go back to your former lifestyles, your family and workplace.
Your first stage of rehabilitation usually begins 24 to 48 hours after your stroke, as soon as your health is stable and while you are in the hospital. For most people, rehab begins with the goal of getting out of bed and into a chair. As you gradually regain strength and function, our therapists will help you regain skills and relearn tasks that were lost because of the stroke. The intensity and focus of initial rehab will vary with each person. It is a process based on your own needs. If you have other health problems (such as a heart condition, or diabetes for example), you may need to go a bit slower than someone who was healthy before his or her stroke.
When you are ready for more intense therapy, your treatment will continue at our rehab facility gradually making you to regain functional movement with our Highly Specialized Physical Rehabilitation Programs. People who have the greatest desire to improve and who have a good support network of friends and family will be the most likely to improve with rehab, regardless of where the rehab takes place.
Rehabilitation is probably one of the most important phases of recovery for many stroke survivors. The effects of stroke may mean that you must change, relearn or redefine how you live. Stroke rehabilitation helps you return to independent living and what you do in rehabilitation depends on what you need to become independent. You may work to improve your independence in many areas.
These include:

  • Self-care skills such as feeding, grooming, bathing, toileting and dressing
  • Mobility skills such as transferring, walking or self-propelling a wheelchair
  • Communication skills in speech and language
  • Cognitive skills such as memory or problem solving
  • Social skills for interacting with other people
  • Physical Rehabilitation Services you receive in our facility may include:
    – Rehabilitation nursing
    – Physical therapy

-Occupational therapySpeech-language pathology
– Audiology
-Recreational therapy Nutritional care
-Rehabilitation counseling
-Psychiatry/Psychology
– Chaplaincy
-Patient/Family education
– Support groups
Vocational evaluation, driver’s training and programs to improve your physical and emotional stamina so you can go back to work also may be part of your rehabilitation program.
In our Inpatient rehabilitation facility, patients can stay and engage in a coordinated, intensive program of rehabilitation. Such programs often involve at least 3 hours of active therapy a day, 5 or 6 days a week offering a comprehensive range of medical services, including full-time physician supervision and access to the full range of therapists specializing in post-stroke rehabilitation.
Outpatient facilities allow patients to typically spend several hours, often 3 days each week, at the facility taking part in coordinated therapy sessions and return home after therapy. Comprehensive outpatient facilities frequently offer treatment programs as intense as those of inpatient facilities, but they also can offer less demanding regimens, depending on the patient’s physical capacity.
Our treatment outcomes measures have always been impressive because patients full medical history together with other debilitating and collateral diseases are taken into consideration when history is being taken. Laboratory tests and MRI or CT scans taken while patient is on admission help us to formulate customized treatment programs tailored to the needs of that particular patient.
Our greatest desire for all our stroke patients is to fully rehabilitate them back to their former lifestyles, family and workplace eventually making them useful to themselves, their family and workplace. Brain plasticity and its ability to remodel, recover and re-engineer its brain cells to make the body parts relearn what it used to do have been our greatest ally. Our Highly Specialized Physical Rehabilitation Programs tailored to individual patients have made it possible for us to reach our goals and desires. When patients and family members are willing and ready to make a difference with the treatment regimen and goals of their loved ones, our treatment outcomes and eventual graduation to independent living is always quickly assured.
Its never too late for any patient, our Highly Specialized Physical Rehabilitation Programs will always make an eventual difference in your outcome measures.
